How can I add ‘Sources’ and a ‘Target’ for Consolidation to ‘DriveSpan App’?

‘DriveSpan App’ on your mobile device is the central control unit for connecting sources and a target wireless to your consolidation scenario, and for executing the consolidation.

The status of added sources and the target will be shown on the ‘DriveSpan’ user interface.

On the home screen, you find an intuitive representation for sources to be added within the outer ring and a target to add in the center.

Home Screen free_1

In general you can select the following sources:

  • PC (and attached external devices)
  • Mac (and attached external devices)
  • Mobile devices
  • Cloud services

Initially, please make sure that all devices including sources and target are logged in to the same network: mobile device, PC and Mac. Also, please do not forget to connect external storage devices that you want to use as source or target physically to your PC or Mac, e.g. your USB sticks or external storage drives.

For adding a source, press the plus button. The next page will show all available sources/devices in your network that you can use for consolidation. Press on the respective source device and a selection option will open.

Selecting a PC or Mac and available external storage

Make sure your PC or Mac is switched on, your PC or Mac uses the same network as ‘DriveSpan’, and ‘WiFi+Transfer’ is installed and running on your PC or Mac (check details below). If you are a Nero Platinum(later than 2018) user, WiFi+Transfer is included in the product. Otherwise, you can download and install WiFi+Transfer from https://www.drivespan.net/.

In the window select your PC or Mac. We are using the example of a PC  – a Mac will work accordingly.
PC-Other Select_2

Press on the PC name listed here. If the permission to connect to this PC was not set so far, ‘DriveSpan App’ will send a 6 digit access code to your PC. Type the given PIN into the interface showing at ‘DriveSpan App’ and press ‘Access’. Your PC is set for connection with ‘DriveSpan’, now. If you are using the same PC or Mac ever so often in connection with ‘DriveSpan App’ on the same mobile device, you will not have to enter the PIN  again.

PC Access

Once done, you can access all internal and external drives (connected to your PC or Mac) and set them as a source (or target: see further down) for consolidation.

Selecting a Mobile Device

When selecting ‘Mobile Devices’ the mobile device, on which you run ‘DriveSpan App’, will be shown by default. Press on it to select it for integration into your consolidation scenario (see device selected in above list).

Note: After the initial release version of ‘Drive Span App’,  you can expect an update allowing you to add more than one mobile device to your consolidation setup (stay tuned via Nero KnowHow).

Selecting a Cloud Service

If you are using a cloud service like ‘OneDrive’ (support for further services planned), you can select it and directly log into your account via DriveSpan App.

OneDrive_2When all your sources are set, go back to the home screen where you will find them indicated by name in the outer ring of ‘DriveSpan App’. If wanted, add more sources by pressing the ‘Source’ plus, again.

Sources home2

You can check the status of each source by clicking on the respective icon. At the bottom of this screen, you can also remove the source from your list of devices. The same is also possible on the home screen via long press on the respective source icon.PC Sources check2

Setting your Target

Now, press on the target icon in the center and add one target. This can be your PC or Mac, an attached external storage, or a cloud service. You cannot consolidate to a mobile device.

In the case shown below, the target is an external PC storage drive under D:, that we have named ‘DriveSpan’ for the sake of showing it in this FAQ.

Target select2

Target status control and removing behavior works exactly like with the source setup. Please make sure not to select a target device that you initially selected as a source device. This will not work.

When your target has been selected, you are ready for consolidation. Press on the button ‘Consolidate now’ at the bottom of ‘DriveSpan App’ to start your consolidation.

If you want to cancel the whole source and target selection, in order to do the setup again, just press ‘Reset’ in the home screen top right.

Integrating a PC or Mac

Integrating a Mac or PC into the consolidation requires that ‘WiFi+Transfer’ is installed on the respective computer. A free PC version of ‘WiFi+Transfer’ tool is available for download at www.drivespan.net. A free Mac version of ‘WiFi+Transfer’ tool is available via Mac App Store.

With the free version of DriveSpan App you can consolidate into your OneDrive cloud. If you want to store all your stuff on a hard disk or a NAS attached to your Mac or your PC, DriveSpan requires an In-App-Purchase.

If you are using ‘Nero Platinum 2019’ or ‘Nero Standard 2019’ (and later versions), ‘WiFi+Transfer’ tool was already installed on your PC together with the ‘Nero Suite’ installer. As an owner of Nero Suite 2019 & later the feature to use your PC as a target for consolidation will be unlocked automatically – i.e. you get the In-App-Purchase for free.

Check below table as a reference for using sources & targets.

‘Nero Recode’ is an easy to use application, which supports transcoding various media source file formats to a variety of target video formats, so that you can playback your trans-coded media files on compatible devices.

A comfortable function in ‘Nero Recode’ is supplying many predefined device profiles in different device categories, so that you can select the proper device profile, and trans-code all the media files for your device, easily.

Many users always ask us “Has the new ‘Nero Recode’ added device profiles for the latest popular smartphones and tablets?”

The answer is “Yes”. About every half year, ‘Nero Recode’ will update its list of supported device profiles with latest popular smartphone and tablet devices.

NR device profiles

From ‘Nero Recode’ 2019, you do not only benefit from profiles for smartphone and tablet devices, but also have the option to select disc compatible profiles to trans-code to fully video disc compliant files. Can I convert video files to be fully compatible to disc formats like DVD or BD?

Starting with Nero 2019, in ‘Nero Recode’ you have the option to select disc compatible profiles to trans-code your files.

This is very beneficial, if you want to use disc compatible files in your editing or authoring project in ‘Nero Video’.

Imagine you want to edit quite a number of 4K source footage files and burn your project to a Blu-ray Disc.  With ‘Nero Recode’ you can improve your ‘Nero Video’ editing and burning speed drastically now, when you just trans-code your files from 4 K to a Blu-ray Disc compatible profile, initially. ‘Nero Video’ is fully ‘SmartEncoding’ enabled, so it will benefit from importing, editing and burning disc compatible files.

Just use ‘Nero Recode’ in the regular way and select the new profile ‘Disc compatible …’.

Click ‘ok’, and on the home screen click ‘Start encoding’. When the encoding is finished, Nero Recode will show a ‘more’ button. Click it to select between handing over your encoded files to a ‘Nero Video’ editing or a disc authoring project.

‘Nero Video’ will open your project in the disc compatible format that you selected in ‘Nero Recode’, before. This is very convenient.

The same process applies if you select a DVD compatible profile in ‘Nero Recode’.

Can I manage and playback media on ‘OneDrive’ with Nero MediaHome – even access ‘Files On-Demand’?

OneDrive is a very useful cloud service that many people use as a free version or within their Office 365 subscription. OneDrive embeds into the PC system and shows up like a regular drive in Windows Explorer. When you use Windows 10, OneDrive is auto installed, but you need to create an account and sign in to make use of it.

OneDrive Files On-Demand

With ‘Windows 10 Fall Creators Update’ in late 2017, Microsoft has embedded a very powerful feature into OneDrive that is called ‘OneDrive Files On-Demand’.

Now, you have the option to have your files only available in the cloud, as ‘online only’ – in such a case, the content will not be synced with your PC, but you can still see the folders and the content in your PC folder. With this great feature, you can save space on your PC, as you no longer need to store the content locally. Via ‘Files On-Demand’ you just make locally available, what you really need for the projects on your PC.

From Nero 2019 onwards you have this comfortable option embedded into Nero MediaHome, allowing you to access online only files in the browsing view, and download for playback or creative use cases on demand.

As Nero MediaHome library is also the basis for all of your related Nero applications via Nero MediaBrowser, you will have this feature readily available for accessing any online only content from OneDrive – be it video, photos, or music – in Nero applications. Due to the fact that Nero MediaBrowser also works with many non-Nero application you can even hand over ‘Files on Demand’ via drag & drop  into these applications, in case they can deal with photos, video, or music.

How do  ‘Files On-Demand’ work?

Initially you need to check if your OneDrive client is installed with your Windows OS. As mentioned, under Windows 10 this will be done automatically, when the new OS is installed. Make sure to have the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update or later installed on your PC to make use of ‘Files On-Demand’.

Once ready with your OneDrive client, you will see OneDrive as a drive with folders in your Windows Explorer.

OneDrive Windows Explorer

Just three easy steps

  1. Please start Nero MediaHome and add OneDrive as your watched folder. You can select either the whole drive or individual folders inside of OneDriveadd OneDrive as watch folder
  2. If you want to access your online-only media files in Nero MediaHome library directly, you need to sign in to your OneDrive account. The interface is provided via Nero MediaHome, so you do not need to leave Nero MediHome. In order to access ‘OneDrive Files on Demand’ in Nero MediaHome , please sign in with the same account that you have signed in to with your OneDrive client applicationsign in
  3. Nero MediaHome will list the media files of your OneDrive account in the library. The clips with the blue-cloud icon are the ones that are online onlyNMH with OneDrive_01

Now, you can manage and playback your OneDrive media files directly in Nero MediaHome, including your online-only files. You also can easily make them locally available via right-click mouse.
