What’s new in Nero Recode

Better Quality, Faster Speed

In the latest update of Nero Recode, we have made significant improvements to the video encoding process. Our engineers have developed advanced algorithms that ensure better video quality while maintaining faster encoding speeds. Now you can enjoy high-quality videos without sacrificing time. Whether you’re converting videos for playback on your mobile device or creating a digital archive of your favorite movies, Nero Recode has got you covered.

Support for Adding Subtitles to Videos

In addition to the improvements in video encoding, the latest update of Nero Recode now includes support for adding subtitles to your videos. Whether you want to add captions for better accessibility or include translations for international viewers, Nero Recode makes it easy. With a simple and intuitive interface, you can import subtitle files in various formats and customize their frame rate and delays. Now, you can enhance your videos with subtitles and make them more engaging and inclusive.

Difference between soft and burn-in subtitles

Subtitles are a great way to enhance your videos, but it’s important to understand the difference between soft and burn-in subtitles. Soft subtitles are separate files or embedded text streams that can be turned on or off by the viewer. They are typically used for adding captions or translations to videos. On the other hand, burn-in subtitles are permanently embedded into the video itself and cannot be turned off. They are commonly used for videos that need to be shared on platforms that don’t support separate subtitle files. Nero Recode supports both types of subtitles, giving you the flexibility to choose the best option for your videos.

How Nero Cloud GPU Accelerates AI Image Upscaling

We’re pleased to announce that the latest version significantly improves processing speed through the Nero Cloud GPU (available since October 2023).
With this enhancement, you can now upscale images faster than ever before — powered by the acceleration of Nero’s high-performance Cloud GPU.

What is the Cloud Process?

The Cloud process uses Nero’s remote AI engine integrated within the AI Image Upscaler (Windows Desktop App) to handle image processing tasks.

Your images are securely uploaded to our EU-based servers for processing.
Rest assured — your photos are never stored after completion. Once the task is finished, all uploaded data is immediately and permanently deleted, ensuring that your personal images remain private and secure.
We take your data privacy seriously and are fully committed to protecting it.

Why do we need the Cloud process?

AI image upscaling performance depends heavily on GPU power and efficiency.

Expensive GPU

In recent years, GPU prices have soared due to the growing demand from cryptocurrency mining and AI-generated content (AIGC). As a result, not every user can afford high-end graphics cards.

Even if you have a capable GPU at home, you might experience slower performance or limited access when using a laptop or traveling without your desktop PC.

The Online Engine Mode solves all these issues — no more errors, hardware limitations, or long waiting times.

With Nero Cloud GPU, you’ll always enjoy fast, stable, and high-quality upscaling, wherever you are.

Can I use the Cloud process for free?

The Cloud process is not a free service — it requires Nero Credits to operate. Each upscaling task typically consumes 1–2 credits, depending on the selected model and options.

To use Cloud processing, you’ll also need Pro version privileges. You can upgrade your entitlement through in-app purchases or online purchases.

As a bonus, we’ll add 100 Nero Credits to your account after a successful purchase.

How to use the Cloud process?

  1. Launch the app and import your image.
  2. Set the target size, AI model, and face options, then click the [Cloud] button to start.
  3. The app will upscale your image using the Nero Cloud GPU.
  4. Once the processing is complete, don’t forget to save your result.

💡 Tip: You can enable Auto-start and set the engine mode to Online, then choose a default model.

After that, simply import an image — no need to click any button. The app will automatically begin upscaling using the Nero Cloud GPU, ensuring faster results on any PC.

What to Consider

  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection.

  • Pro version access is required to use Cloud processing.

  • Make sure you have enough Nero Credits, as each task consumes 1–2 credits.

After processing, remember to save your images to local storage promptly to avoid losing results.

How to restore old backups from Nero BackItUp?

The recommended way to restore a backup done with a previous version of Nero BackItUp is to install this particular version again and to use it for the restore. This approach ensures maximum compatibility and highest success rates. Older versions of the software can be downloaded here: https://www.nero.com/eng/downloads/previous-versions/
Additionally you will need your serial key to enable the software. You might still have it on your PC, in your emails or on the CD/DVD cover of a previous purchase.

If the above doesn’t work in your case, there are another two options.

To differentiate between the two, please make sure to have enabled file name extensions in your Windows Explorer.

  1. Go to “Windows Explorer”
  2. Click “View”.
  3. Make sure the checkbox beside “File name extensions” is checked.

Now your backup files will have a dot and a three letter extension at the end. e.g. MyBackup.nco.

For files with the extension .nco you can try to open them with the latest version of the free tool 7-Zip  https://www.7-zip.org/download.html

For files with the extension .nba and .nda please install the trial version of the latest Nero BackItUp product from here: https://www.nero.com/eng/downloads/

  1. Go to “Nero BackItUp”.
  2. Click on “Restore”.
  3. Go to “Browse”.
  4. Click on “Local Sources”
  5. Select your backup files.

If no error is shown after selecting the files, it is highly likely that Nero BackItUp will be able to restore the files after purchase.
