While using Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express for burning content to a disc, you may come across the error message ‘Burn process failed ā¦’.
So, what does these errors mean and how to fix the related issues?
In the whole burning process of Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express, the given application will do different checks to make sure that the burning related operations do not fail.Ā These will be:
checking device(s)
checking the medium
checking disc eraseĀ or similar operations
If any critical error happens (like the disc/medium is broken, theĀ disc recorder cannot be accessed, etc.) and the application cannot fix or recover the given issue, such an error dialog will pop up in the application.
As the dialog will indicate and show in detail within the message box, most of the typical cases are related to the fact that the disc/medium is broken or the disc speed for burning is not working correctly.Ā So, in many cases putting a new disc into your disc recorder and clicking the button āBurn Againā will solve your issues. The disc speed issue can probably be solved by updating your firmware.
Still there are some situations when the above mentioned solutions cannot resolve your issue. For such cases it is meaningful to do a deeper check via the application log file.
For creating a log file, in Nero Burning ROM please click the button ‘Save Logā¦’ or ‘Save’ in Nero Express, within the respective message box .
In the exported log files, you can find some keywords.
Below table lists some of the most important keywords that you can check based on the provided solutions, here. This may help fixing your issue.
When using Nero Video for burning videodiscs, you may run into this error.
āStatus 3ā is a general status for the burning process in Nero Video. It means that some error occurred when burning video data to disc either due to missing system resources (1), issues within the transcoding process (2) before the burning has started, or (3) in the final burning process.
Not enough System Resources will cause āBurn process failed with status 3ā
Burning a videodisc Nero Video contains several processes, like creating disc menus, transcoding the video files in the authoring project, and burning the content to disc/local disk. During the whole process, the application needs enough system resources (CPU, Memory) to complete the job. So, when burning a video disc in Nero Video, please make sure those applications requesting huge system resources are not running at the same time.
Failed Transcoding will cause āBurn process failed with status 3ā
While burning content to disc in Nero Video, all video and audio source clips should match DVD/AVCHD/BD disc compatibility, like the video format, the video resolution, and the bitrate of the video files. In many cases, the files used within a disc project do not match DVD/AVCHD/BD disc compatibility, so Nero Video needs to transcode these files before burning them to the disc medium or to a local disk. Sometimes, this transcoding process may fail, also causing the following burning process to fail, resulting in the error āBurn process failed with status 3ā.
Below you can find some reasons for failed transcoding:
Not enough space on the hard disk partition (default is C:\, but it can be modified in Options -> Application Setting -> Save) which is used to store the transcoded files
Some source video files may not be supported in Nero Video encoding engine
The source video files added to your disc project may be damaged, which will cause the transcoding to fail
etc.
If the above cases apply, we recommend doing a pre-transcoding of your source files in Nero Recode. From Nero Reocde 2019, the application has the option to select disc compatible profiles to trans-code video files.
For more information, refer to Nero KnowHow 00131.
Issues within the burning process causing āBurn process failed with status 3ā
Nero Video will do different checks to make sure that the burning related operations do not fail. These will be:
checking device(s)
checking the medium
checking disc erase
or similar operations
If any critical error happens (like the disc/medium is broken, the burner cannot be accessed, etc.) and the application cannot fix or recover the given error, such a dialog will pop up in the application, indicating that the burning failed with the given error.
The error message shows a link to a log file for getting a better understanding of the issue.
Click āokā to open it or go to this path: “c:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Nero\Nero 2019\Nero Vision\NeroVideoLog.txt”, where you can find the error information of āBurn process failed with status 3ā.
Please check the log file for some error codes with typical keywords like āKEY_******ā. Below table shows typical error codes and options how to fix these.
In some edge cases, if the size of the created disc content is larger than the disc capacity, this may also cause the burning failed error.
To fix such an issue, you may (1) either change the disc content to remove some files from the content, or (2) modify/change the quality setting of the video files.
For the second case you can open the āRecording Format Optionsā, select the disc type, and change the āQuality settingā to āFit to Discā. In this case, Nero Video can automatically transcode the file in a suitable quality, matching your disc type and the available space on the given disc.
If the above solutions cannot fix the issue, please change the burn destination from Optical Disc Drive to Image Recorder, and burn the image to local disk. Use other burning software like Nero Burning ROM or Nero Express and burn again. For more information also check Nero KnowHow 00150.
NOTE: If you want to restart the application or restart your PC, please make sure the Nero Video project is saved.

If your Nero application shows this message in one or the other form, the following overview shows potential problem scenarios and possible solutions.
Problem 1
Your disc is not empty
Solution
It might have happened that you inserted a disc into your drive, which is not empty, i.e. burned data already exist on this disc
Please put an empty disc into your disc recorder drive
The compilation size gives you a reference
Problem 2
a) You have selected to burnĀ more than one copyĀ at a time
b) You are burning a disc withĀ Nero DiscSpan
Solutions
a) If you have selected burning several disc copies with one recorder, Nero will ask you to insert a disc into your drive, each time one disc burning is done
b) This message will also show when using Nero DiscSpan in Nero Burning ROM, which allows you to burn large projects over several discs ā even different types of discs ā in sequence
Within the burn process, Nero Burning ROM will pop up this message ever so often in order to burn to the next disc
Problem 3
a)Ā Your disc does not comply to the type of compilation (disc project) that you have chosen initially
b)Ā You haveĀ more than one disc recorderĀ in your PC or attached to your PC externally
SolutionsĀ
a)Ā Make sure that the type of disc project you have selected complies with the type of disc in your disc drive. For example:Ā If you have selected an Audio-CD project, put an empty CD-R or CD+R into your disc recorder
If you want to burn a DVD-Video disc, insert and empty DVD-R or DVD+R disc into your disc drive
b)Ā In a normal case, you want to burn your disc just once, with one disc recorder. In this case make sure to put the disc into the recorder drive that you have selected for burning
If you have selected burning to multiple disc recorders please make sure to have a disc inserted into each recorder, so that the message will not pop up
TIP! for more details on disc types check Nero KnowHow Glossary
When opening a saved project in Nero Video, the application checks if all files associated to your timeline project are available. This means: all files (video, photo, audio) that you have imported to your project and used within your project timeline – before saving and closing it last time – will be checked for.
If Nero Video shows this message with one or the other file reference, the following problem scenarios and possible solutions apply.
Problem 1
Some or all of the media that you have used in the project timeline reside on an external drive that you disconnected in the meantime.
Solutions
Attach your drive with the respective media used in your project again, click āBrowseā and navigate to the folder that contains the file with the name mentioned in Nero Video message box. Select the file and click āopenā. Nero Video will re-link all files that reside in the same location automatically
If you have moved individual files to other folders, Nero Video will show the same dialog box again, asking for another respective file name. If you have deleted single files in the given location on purpose, click ādeleteā, and continue step by step
If you have deleted all other files, or if you want to start the project anyway, click on ādelete allā
Note:Ā if you deleted linked files in the source location permanently, Nero Video cannot restore these files within a project. So, be careful when permanently deleting source files that are associated to a project.
TIP-1:Ā When editing projects, we recommend always importing all media files from externally attached drives or devices to reside in a hard disk inside of your PC.Ā Otherwise, you will have the risk of losing these files forever due to e.g. deletion on the external drive.Ā In such a case, Nero Video will not be able to restore your project – i.e. relink your files
TIP-2:Ā For more details on what a project is and what project files are about, check Nero KnowHow 00029.
Problem 2
Some or all of the media that you have used in the project timeline reside in a folder that you have moved to a different folder path inside your PC or an external drive.
Solutions
In Nero Video dialog box click on āBrowseā and navigate to the respective folder on your PC that contains the file with the name mentioned in Nero Video message box. Select the file and click āopenā
If this relates to an external drive, and for other steps and processes, please check the steps and tips mentioned above
