1-pass or 2-pass Encoding – Which one is better?

‘Nero Video’ provides two ways of video file encoding as shown in the screenshot: ‘Fast encoding (1-Pass)’ and ‘High Quality (2-Pass )’.

1pass_EN 00037

Two pass encoding makes sense if you have used many effects that need to re-render the individual frames from scratch, or if your input and output formats differ a lot. Two pass encoding does a double check to tweak out the last bit of quality. If your input and output formats are more or less identical it is not neccessary to do 2-pass.

Also note that 2-pass encoding takes the double amount of time to finish the encoding.

Moreover ‘Nero Video’ has ‘Nero SmartEncoding’ technology included that helps you save time and quality in case your input and output format are identical. When SmartEncoding jumps in it will not re-render your exported file and save original quality to file.

AVCHD Discs vs Blu-ray Discs – What makes most sense?

For private home videos that won’t last hours – like a commercial movie would – AVCHD discs are the better choice.

AVCHD gives you Full HD quality on a standard DVD disc (red laser burning) while using the disc recording structure of a BD (BDMV). Due to the latter, only a Blu-ray Player can play AVCHD discs.

AVCHD_EN 00039

The good thing about AVCHD discs is that you get the same quality as on a Blu-ray Disc but you will have much less storage space (e.g. 4.7 GB with single layer, or 8.5 GB when using a double layer DVD disc).

As the name indicates a Blu-ray Disc burns via blue laser and has a much higher storage capacity (25 GB or 50 GB) but is more expensive to use.

A cool thing about Nero Video is that you can also create AVCHD structures on hard discs or external flash devices like USB sticks. If your Blu-ray Player has a USB slot – which most have – you can easily play your Full HD AVCHD disc structures with all the menus from the USB stick or USB attached hard disc without even having to burn a disc.

Can I customize Video Disc Menus in Nero Video?

Yes. Find some examples explained below.

Click on ‘Import files’ to select clips via ‘Windows Explorer’. ‘Nero Video’ ‘Disc Content Window’ will list your clips under the name given in the original file.

Customize DVDs_EN_1 00035

As these names will be used in your disc menu let’s simply polish the names by re-naming them.  Right click on an asset to re-name and type a new name into the window. You can also do that in the disc authoring customization later on.

Click next and you will see that the default menu already has taken over the name. Now select a new menu template. You have the option between three different styles: ‘Standard 2D’, ‘Animated 2D’, and ‘Smart 3D’. Select ‘Gift Box’ from the Smart 3D templates.

Customize DVDs_EN_2 00035

You can see that the asset start buttons show figures that you want to get rid of. Click on the ‘Customize’ tab and select a title. In order to get rid of the figures within the title modify the ‘Appearance’ within the ‘Button Properties’. Just click on ‘text only’ in the drop down box for ‘text numbering’. Do this for all your assets. As you also want further menu pages to be free of numbering click on the ‘disc project’ arrow below and de-select ‘Restart numbering on each menu page’.

Now you want to adapt the ‘Gift Box’ template to a special occasion. Click on the drop down box under ‘theme’ within the template settings tab.

Customize DVDs_EN_3 00035

Apart from the default template ‘white’ you can select ‘Kids’,  ‘Valentine’, or ‘Christmas’. Let’s use the ‘Kids’ template here, and finally let’s exchange the menu name to ‘Kid’s Vacation’.

Customize DVDs_EN_00035

Now click on ‘next’ to see your animated menu template.

Via the menu navigation functions you can check your project before burning to disc.

How can I export several single videos from a long video in one go?

Up from Nero 2017 there is a very simple way doing that in Nero Video called ‘Multi Export‘.

Import your long clip into the timeline of your Nero Video project. Now you can cut the video into the wanted parts manually. A much easier way doing that is using scene detection, though.

Just right click on yor video clip in the timeline, select ‘detection’ and ‘scene detection’.

NV Multi_1EN

The detection window opens and allows you to set overall detection sensitivity and clip duration per single clip to be detected. I recommend leaving the sensitivity as is and set the duration for single clips based on the wanted duration of the single clips you are planning to export.  Then start detection.

NV Multi_2_EN_1

Let’s imagine you have a 30 minute video and want to export single clips with a duration of about 60 seconds each. After detection you will have about 25 to 30 single scenes available in your project. From that you will select your final shots for ‘Multi Export’.

NV Multi_2 EN_2 Detected Scenes

When the detection is done the scene indicator will show the given scenes at the bottom. You have the option changing the settings for better results. When doing this while the detetcion window remains open – after the prior analysis was carried out – new results will be available without re-calculation.

Now select the scenes you like best. If you want to present a ‘best of‘ from a shot event to family or friends I recommend reducing the number of selected files. Less is always more. Spent  a little more time on the perfect selection from your 30 minute source clip: five videos one minute each should do in this case. For doing so open the storyboard full screen view. Via double click you can play individual scenes and also do further triming if wanted.

NV Multi Storyboard full screen EN

Delete the scenes you dislike and you will have the final number of scenes left to ‘multi export’ as single clips in one go. For doing so click on the ‘Multi Export‘ button underneath the timeline.

NV Multi_3EN_2

The dedicated ‘Multi Export’ screen will open. Now proceed with selecting an export format as always. Best choice is input equals output. In this case you keep your quality and also Nero SmartEncoding can come into place. Type in a file name. ‘Nero Video’ will automatically add extensions to your clip name  (name -1, name -2, name -3, etc.) representing the number of exported files. I recommend checking the box add to ‘Nero MediaHome Library’ so you will have all clips ready to play in ‘Nero MediaHome’. Press ‘ok‘ and batch export will be carried out.

NV Multi_4EN

From ‘Nero MediaHome’ you have further options like streaming the files to your TV – also  comfortably make use of Nero Streaming Player App’ for this, or utilize Nero MediaHome Wifi Sync App’ for quickly transfering your set of videos to your iOS or Adroid smartphone wirelessly.

One final note: ‘Nero Multi Export’ only works within express editing. Transitions or title effects are not supported via ‘Multi-Export‘ . Nevertheless you can boost up your footage with the broad range of Nero Video effects, even add one unique effect to all.
